Several interesting games in the Colony Hardcourt Championships should be seen this afternoon -provided the weather keeps fine.

Several keen singles ties can be expected among them being S. A. Gray v A. L. Sullivan, F. H. Kwok vũ W. Liang. G. Choát Wong Ful

nam.

Sullivan, who has had consider-,

of hardcourts, able experience should beat Gray, while it can be quite certain that Frank Kwok and his doubles partner, S. W. Liang,] will be featured in a rare struggle. CHOA'S TEST

Sydney, August 2. Commentators here point out that the decision of the Australian Lawn Tennis Association not to approve of the English women's team, now offered for a tour in Australia was made because the personnel of the team would be unlikely to attract sufficient gate- money to cover the heavy expenses.

They state that the English

LTA months ago promised that the Wightman Cup team should go on to Australia from America, stipulating that the travelling and hotel expenses, and 15s a day per player for incidentals, should be borne by the Australian body. Since then some members of the team have had to decline the in- vitation

CONSEQUENCES OF U.S. VICTORY

(By S. M. ASH)

Glasgow, July 31. THAT much-travelled trophy, the Davis Cup, is now making its second westward crossing of the Atlantic, its first being in 1913, when the Unit- ed States of America beat the British Isles.

Also

it has twice crossed the same ocean in the opposite direction in 1903, when the British Isles first won it, and in 1927, when France won the first of her six consecutive victories.

"

IT HAS JOURNEYED ONCE EACH WAY BETWEEN THE BRITISH ISLES AND AUSTRALASIA-IN 1907, THE LATTER FIRST VICTORY IN THE COMPETITION, AND IN 1912, WHEN J. C. PARGE THE IRISH RUGBY INTERNATIONALIST IN DE FEATING NORMAN BROOKES AT MELBOURNE WAS MAIN LY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RETURN PASSAGE. IT IS OF IN- TEREST TO RECALL THAT H. ROPER BARRETT, THE NON- RECENT PLAYING CAPTAIN OF THE BRITISH TEAM IN SEASONS, PLAYED IN THE CHALLENGE ROUND THIRTY YEARS AGO.

The Pacific Ocean, also, has been traversed by the Davis Cup in 1914, when Australasia beat America a few days after the outbreak of the Great War, and in 1920, when the two "Bills," Tilden and Johnston, started the US.A. on a great series of seven consecutive victories...
