"Self-Defence In Widest Sense"
Tokyo, To-day.
The Japanese admit that one Japanese plane was lost in the air raid on Canton, last Tuesday, but claim that three Chinese planes were shot down in the air battle.
Asked why Canton was bombed, a spokesman said the measure was taken in self-defence in the widest sense.
General Sugiyama declared to the Privy Coun- cil that Japan would deliver a fateful blow to the Chinese troops as a punishment. The Japanese Government would no longer attempt to settle the incidents locally.
The Japanese press states that the Soviet are holding manoeuvres in the next few days in the vicinity of Vladivostok-Reuter's Bulletin Ser- vice.
