IS ENGLISH ROWING ON DECLINE?
Last Two Regattas Have Proved Disastrous
EMPIRE GAMES PROBABLES
British oarsmen are very per- turbed at again losing all the chief trophies of the Henley Re- gatta to foreign competitors.. They consider if rowing is to re- -gain its prestige, great care and attention will have to be paid to the selection and training of principal crews.
The results at the last two Henley Royal Regattas have been rather disastrons to English rowing, as in 1936 four of the main events were won by foreign crews, and again this year the three main races went to Ger- many, Austria, and America.1 However, all the events were closely contested, and it was per- haps only due to the fact that the winning crews had been much longer together.
A description of the final of the Grand Challenge between Germany and Jesus College (Cam- bridge) may be interesting, ow- ing to the possibility of the latter! being chosen to represent Eng- land at the Empire Games Sydney next year.

From the first stroke Jesus College took the lead, which they maintained over nearly a mile of the course. Entering the en closure the Germans sprinted and gained a slight advantage.

When it is considered that the Spurs winners were only defeated by a West Ham fraction of a second by America and Italy at the Olympic Games, THIRD the English crew's performance Cardiff was good, and should they make Millwall the trip to Australia some interest. ing racing will be witnessed.
