GOVERNMENT | An "Unoffical War Can Be Deadly-Too

OFFER AIDS REFUGEES

(BY A STAFF CORRESPONDENT)

Fine organisation and a hard- working voluntary and Government staff have done amazing things to provide comfort at the Shanghai Refugee Centre at Happy Valley

Happy children running about the matshed covered walks and groups of mothers and their friends chat ting are everywhere to be seen, but what struck me most was the very efficient way in which the staff han-1 dled their problems, whenever ther cropped up.

I was personally conducted

various departments by the und

Rev

Upsdell, who is in charge of the Government side of the Centre.

FIRST INFLUX

You can imagine the time we had when the first batch of refu- gees arrived here last Friday night, wet and dreary with nerves shat- tered by their terrible experiences up North. The staff had been work- ing hard to get everything ready and as soon as they began to arrive, we saw to it that they were made comfortable right away and soon had them asleep with their worries behind them

These Jockey Clubs rooms, the Weighing-In Room and Office are happily placed and made registra- tion possible almost immediately on arrival As soon-as refugees had left the reception room, they passed through the Surgery where they receive inoculation against Cholera

Situated as the stands and build- ings are, all are in now well pleased and receive an abundance of sun- shine and breeze.

Conducted to the medical centre, I was given the very interesting news hat two qualified Government doctors, Dr. (Mrs.) Dover and Dr. (Miss) Buttonjee were in constant attendance upon the camp and are backed up by three qualified Euro-

Shanghai, To-day. Two Japanese destroyers are stated to have attacked and sunk a Chinese survey ship off the Chekiang coast yesterday.

The Chinese vessel was armed only with a machine-gun and fled into the port of Tungchow, where the hail of shells from the destroyers guns sent her to the bottom

A Japanese spokesman reveals that the two destroyers were forced to sheer off by a Chinese coastal-bat- tery Trans-Ocean.
