AMBASSADOR'S COURAGE AND FORTITUDE

Shanghai, To-day.

Tribute was paid to the British Ambassador, Sir Hughe Knatch ball Hugessen, by Colonel W. A. Lovat Fraser, the British military attache, for his remarkable courage. and calmness during the attack on the party by two Japanese planes yesterday.

Colonel Lovat-Fraser said that the Ambassador, although seriously wounded and obviously in great pain, did not lose consciousness.

Their one thought after the at tack was to push on to Shanghai and during the remainder of the journey they only stopped once or twice to give Sir Hughe water.

ATTENDS TO BUSINI

When they reached the Country Hospital the Ambassador's forti tade had not given out, because before submitting to the ministra- tions of nurses and doctors, he attended to certain urgent busi- ress.

Colonel Lovat-Fraser said that the machine-gunning by one of the Japanese planes, greatly surprises the party.

After the Ambassador had been wounded, both he and Mr E Hail Patch, British Treasury official jumped out of the cars and discuss ed the situation.

BLOWN OFF ROAD

It was while they were confer- ring that the second Japane plane attacked the cars with a bomb, the missile falling into paddy field.
