The occasion of his remarks was the annual meeting of the Newcastle club - Mr. Mather was ex- pressing his regrets at the team not having gained promotion and said that they had obtained more points playing away than at home, and if only they had won their home engagements promotion would have been assured.

I agree with that, and if he had left the matter there, no one would have crossed swords with him. But he went on to say that they had lost those points in many cases as a result of bad or poor refereeing, or words to that effect. That is where he stumbled He should know what practically every official in football knows, that
