CHINA ACCEPTS BRITISH PLAN IN PRINCIPLE: MR. HULL ON SITUATION

The Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull, speak- ing at a press conference yesterday, said that the Chinese Ambassador had not signified the Chinese Government's willingness to agree to the British proposal for a truce at Shanghai if the Japanese Government does likewise.

Asked whether the Government would force evacuation of the remaining American citizens in Shanghai if the warring troops invaded the Inter- national Settlement, Mr. Hull replied that he had not received formal suggestions from officials at Shanghai.
