PLAN EFFORT

Shanghai, 11 a.m., To-day.

Shanghai's quietest night for a week was rude- ly shattered at about 7 a.m. this morning when Chinese artillery commenced a terrific bombard- ment of the Yangtsepoo area, the canonading spreading slowly along the lines toward Soochow Creek until the entire fighting line was involved from end to end.

Last night's quiescence is now revealed to have been due to the carrying out of a large scale relieving operations by the Chinese military head- quarters, who drew out the 88th and 87th Divisions, which have borne the brunt of the fighting and put the crack 1st and 2nd Divisions into the lines, ready for the fresh offensive heralded by this morning's hail of high explosive.

During the night, also, Japanese warships moved down river to Woosung and there are indi- cations that another attempt will be made to land in force.
