"Le Temps" says that the Powers will make no attempt to induce Nan- king and Tokyo to negotiate with one another.

The question is to keep Shang- hai away from the battleheld

The incidents at Shanghai have severely handicapped the Japanese plan, which was to obtain a local settlement in North China.

Electric light cables were fused by the intense heat, plunging the town into darkness, but this was offset by the crimson flames which lit Yup the entire countryside.

A special train was run from Lyons carrying firemen to assist in fighting the comlagration, which was controlled after many hours hard work on the part of the fire bri- gades.—Renter.____
