The Shanghai Municipal Council has lodged a protest with the Mayor of Greater Shanghai con- cerning the presence of the Peace Preservation Corps on the Hungjao Road, which led to the shoot- ing of an officer and a marine of the Japanese Naval Landing Party last night.

TOKYO INSTRUCTIONS

A report from Tokyo states that at a meeting of the Cabinet this morning, the Shanghai Incident was discussed.

Instructions were afterwards sent to the com- mander of the Japanese Naval Landing Party in Shanghai, informing him that the Peace Preserva tion Corps must be held responsible. The Japanese Naval Landing Party is to demand immediate apology and severe punishment of the men involv- ed in the shooting.

If the demands are rejected, the Landing Party is to adopt self-defence measures and take all ac- tion it considers necessary to achieve a fundamen tal and satisfactory settlement of the incident. (Continued on Poge 243
