RANGER SECURES THE “HAT-TRICK"
TENNIS AT WIND-SWEPT VALLEY Enjoyable Game In Poor Conditions CCC BEAT H.K.C.C.
(By "ADREM”)
Conditions at the Valley yester day afternoon were hardly con- ducive to good tennis but they cer- tainly did create a great deal of amusement and judging by the spirit in which the match was con- tested, both the players from Crai gengower, who won 6-3, and Hong Kong Cricket Club, thoroughly en joyed themselves.
The wind simply shrieked dow Wong Nei-chong Gap and it was possible to send a ball soaring into the air in the direction of th football stands to have it caught by playful gusts of wind and br converted into a first rate lob of excellent length.
Early in the proceedings, the sight-screens were flattened despit the frenzied efforts of several of the spectators to hold them up by hanging on to flapping pieces of rope which had worked loose fro their moorings......
THOROUGHLY ENJOYABLE All these incidents apart though, as I have already remarked, every- body appeared to enjoy themselves. so all was well.

US. SLOOP SETS NEW RECORD
Newport, Rhode Island, To-day.
Great Britain might well bid the America's Cup "Good By" following the third race of the series. yesterday, when Mr. Harold S. Vanderbilt's Ranger completed her "Hat-trick" in beating Mr. T. 0. M. Sopwith's Endeavour II for the third time, by ap- proximately threequarters of a mile, and inciden- tally setting up a new record for the first 15 miles on the windward leg.
PRIOR TO THE RACE, MR. SOPWITH DECIDED NOT TO MAKE ANY CHANGES IN ENDEAVOUR'S RIG, BUT JETTISON- ED TWO TONS OF LEAD BALLAST. YESTERDAY'S WIND WAS PREDICTED AS MODERATE UP TO 15 MILES AN HOUR, MR. SOPWITH STATING THAT HE WOULD MAKE A BIG EFFORT TO WIN IN HONOUR OF QUEEN ELIZABETH'S 37TH BIRTHDAY, WHICH FELL YESTERDAY.
All Naval vessels and yachts at Newport were tastefully de corated with flags and bunting in honour of Queen Elizabeth's birthday. Odds of 10 to 1 were offered against Endeavour II win- ning the third race, but nobody would take any bets.
