In Close Touch With France And United States
MR. EDEN'S TALK WITH AMBASSADORS
London, To-day.
In a very brief statement on China in the House of Commons yesterday, the Foreign Secre- tary, Mr. Anthony Eden, said his latest information was that the situation appeared to have quietened, although naturally there was an undercurrent of nervous apprehension.
Meanwhile, he had been in touch with the Chinese and Japanese Gov- ernments and had made it clear to them that the British Government were conscious of the anxiety of the situation, which they were watch- ing closely, and had expressed con- cern. lest hasty action by either should lead to a clash which should be avoided if the situation was handled with caution by both sides.
FRANCE AND U. S.
He had also been in consultation with the French and American Gov- ernments as regards the situation generally. He proposed to continue. such consultations.
In the meantime the British Gov- ernment would lose no opportunity of making any contribution towards. peaceful solution of the difficulties.
