On the 1st July, 1912, agreement was entered into by the Chinese Engineering & Mining Co. Ltd. a British Company registered in Lon- don, and the Lanchow Mining Co., purely Chinese Company operating un- der the laws of China... Under this agreement, each Company retained possession of its seperate assets, but each agreed to entrust the management of its entire business to a single administration to be called, the Kailan Mining Administration, with its Head Office in Tientsin:
The Chinese Engineering & Mining Co. was popularly known în China as the Kaiping Company; and the word “Kai-lan” is one of those "multum în parvo" words to which the Chinese language lends itself, being made up of the first syllables of the words "Kai-ping" and "Lan-chow."
In this manner the operation of one of the largest coalfields in ; China—if not the largest-and the distribution and sale of the whole output, was rational- ised with a thoroughness and com prehensiveness which has so far proved unattainable in countries generally considered to be more progressive.
