POLAND NOW THRUST INTO SHARP CONFLICT WITH ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

Warsaw, To-day.

Poland is now in the grip of an intense con- flict between Church and State which it is believed will have far-reaching consequences.

ORIGIN OF THE DISPUTE WAS THE REFUSAL OF THE ARCHBISHOP OF CRACOW TO ADMIT KING CAROL OF RU- MANIA TO CRACOW, AS THE LATTER IS NOT A ROMAN CATHOLIC. KING CAROL HAD INTENDED VISITING THE TOMB OF THE POLISH PATRIOT, MARSHAL JOSEF PILSUD- SKI.

ANOTHER BONE OF CONTENTION WAS THE DISPOSI- TION OF THE COFFIN CONTAINING THE MORTAL REMAINS

OF THE DICTATOR.

The coffin rests in the Chapel of St. Leonard, which the Archbishop declares to be unsuitable owing to its dampness.

Several Senators and Deputies have asked the Premier to convene an extraordinary session of Parlia- ment to pass a law removing the jurisdiction of the Archbishop and to "nationalise" all Cathedrals in which Marshal. Pilsudski and other Polish patriots are honoured.

SITUATION GRAVE

Since the Polish Foreign Minis- ter, Colonel Joseph Beck, called on the Papal Nuncio in Warsaw yes- terday, and the Polish Ambassador et the Vatican paid a similar call in Rome, the diplomatic situation between Warsaw and the Holy See is regarded as grave.

In political circles. in Warsaw, far-reaching political consequences are expected from the conflict.

To prevent demonstrations by the people, who have been considerably roused by the Archbishop's attitude, the po- lice have taken stringent pre- cautions to prevent disorder.

GUARD ON ARCHBISHOP

The Archbishop's Palace and Marshal Pilsudski's remains have both been placed under military guard.
