NE of the most interesting questions to be decided shortly is: "Who will take Fred Fred Perry's place as world's champion of 1937?" held that honour for three years, a longer period of actual wins at Wimbledon than any player since Tony Wilding, who won it from 1910 to 1913, losing it in 1914 to Norman Brookes.

It was at the end of the 1934 season that the American youth first caught the attention of experts. at Wimbledon Budge beat von Cramm in the Davis Cup tie, after the issue had been decided in favour of the U.S.A. The score was 0-6, 9——7, 68, 6-3. He beat Henkel in four close sets. He and Mako reached the semi-final of the

W. Lawrence, of the Victoria Recreation Club, has been invited to take part in the third night's programme, but as he will probably proceed to Cantón with a combina- tion of swimmers from his club who have 'been invited by the Canton Acquatic Sports Club, it is not likely that he will be able to turn up.

HAS BEST CHANCE. On the whole Budge stands out as more likely to win the singles title at Wimbledon this year than any other player.
Von Cramm has not been doing as well as in former years. Quist - and McGrath
are his closest rivals. Much as we may admire our men, the odds favour Budge against them, and he was so close to von: Cramm last year, and so much on- the up grade, that he should bene- fit by his greater youth, and win at Wimbledon.
Grant has shown that Budge is not unbeatable, though he is mighty hard to beat.
BUDGE'S BEST SCORES
Budge's best scores in 1935, not mentioned already, were as follow: He beat Crawford in the David Cup tie at 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 1-6, 13–11, and beat Quist 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.
At Wimbledon he beat Quist 6-2, 6-4, 6-4. He beat Parker four sets, two very close. He beat Parker again in straight sets. He beat Fred Perry for the Southern Cali fornian title, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Here
pain (as with Grant v Vines),
was on the verge of turning professional, and his mind was not on the game as it had been. Budge lost twice to Perry for the English and American titles, and lost once that year to Grant.
