CANTON LAUNCH EXPLOSION

Sixteen Killed And Ten Injured

ABSENCE OF SAFETY VALVE ALLEGED

Preliminary investigation into the launch dis- aster on the Saiking River, near Canton, on Mon- day, reveals that cause of the boiler explosion, which it is now revealed killed 16 and seriously in- jured 10, was the fact that the boiler was not equip- ped with automatic safety valves.

It is alleged that pressure in the boiler was raised, since the launch was towing six junks, the weight being far too much for her low power, which was increased beyond the safety point.
