TOW-LINE
PARTED LA DELIBERATELY
Sensation By Crew Of Endeavour I
YACHT SAFE AFTER 1,000 MILES
Newport, Rhode Island
May 24. Endeavour I, which has been fent to Mr. T. O. M. Sopwith as a poten- - tial Amercia's cup challenger, HP- rived here to-day from - England, bringing the disclosure that the craft made the latter part of the voyage under its own sall because the tow-line was thrown overboard. deliberately at the height of a storm atisen.
The assumption had been that the separation of the yacht from her convoy, the motor yacht Viva II, 900 miles off Newport, was because i of the parting of the tow-line. Crew members said they threw the line-overboard to make for easier going in the' heavy seas.
SKIPPERS® #FEUD “LS: Meanwhile it was authoritatively : reported that Ned Heard, skipper of the Endeavour I, and Wallace Grint,- skipper of the Viva II, were engag....... ed in a feud as a result of the in- cident at sea.”
Mr. Heard was said to be “infur- iated" because he believed that the Viva II continued to Newport with- oût returning to pick up the En- deavour after the storm had subsid- ed, thereby forcing the probable challenger to travel approximately 1,100 miles under her own sail.,
FOR 40-HOURS..........
The skipper of the Viva II, how- ever, was said to have insisted that he sought the Endeavour for forty hours before starting for Newport.
Endeavour I, it was expected to- day, will proceed to Herreshoff Yard at Britol, R. I. to-morro United Press.
