CARTAGENA SHELLED? FURTHER GERMAN REPRISAL Italy & Germany Withdraw From Control Scheme
CRISIS NEARING BREAKING POINT
LONDON, TO-DAY.
THE TRAGIC SEQUENCE OF EVENTS FOL- LOWING THE BOMBING OF THE DEUTSCH- LAND MAKES IT PLAIN THAT EUROPE IS ON THE BRINK OF DISASTER.
Germany's first reprisal, the shelling of Al- meria, with heavy casualties among the civil popu- lation, has been followed, according to Reuter's correspondent in Barcelona, by the bombardment of Cartagena by the German warship squadron, which apparently proceeded up the coast.
No details of the casualties in Cartagena are yet available. Reports from Almeria show that-

Paris, To-day. Fifty of the personnel were drowned in the sinking of the Ci dad Barcelona by a mystery submarine, according to an offi- cial communique issued in Bar- celona, where the local Commit- tee for Public Order claims that there is sufficient evidence to justify the assertion that the torpedo was fired by an Italian submarine -Reuter.

nineteen killed, are critically wounded as a result
of the German shell-fire. Some fifty others were America
less seriously wounded.
The sixteenth century Gothic Church of St. Sebastian was among the buildings damaged in the bombardment.
Fuel has been added to the fire by the official announcement from Rome that ow- ing to the bombardment of her warships at Palma in the island of Mallorca, the Italian Government has decided, to act in concert with Germany and withdraw Italian ships from the Spanish sea patrol and her repre- sentative from the non-intervention com- mittee until adequate security for her ships has been granted. This decision has al- ready been communicated to London, follow- ing Germany's like action.
Italy and Germany are thereby claiming complete freedom of ac- tion in the Spanish conflagration and it is feared that the whole structure of non-intervention so patiently built up has been destroyed. Senor del Vayo, the Valencia Foreign Secretary, is handing the League details of the German bombardment of Almeria and asking The ques- that they be brought to the attention of League members. tion of the special convocation of a Council meeting has been left un- til the result of the deliberations of the Non-Intervention Committee in "known.
On the point whether the Deutschland initiated the attack, Senor. Del Vayo states that some hours previous to the bombing, the Ger- man Admiral informed the Valencia Government that as a result of the recent incident at Palma, German vessels would take the neces- sary steps if approached by Government aeroplanes.
The suspension of German and Italian participation in the control scheme is regarded as a grave development in Geneva as it is inter- preted to mean that both are resuming liberty of action.
The special meeting of the non-intervention committee, called Germany's request, was postponed at Germany's request.-Reuter.
