Trade Barriers To Reconstruction

Dr. Trip's Striking Speech

(SPECIAL TO “CHINA MAIL")

Basle, To-day.

A powerful plea for an international conference to deal with the economic problems confronting the world at the present moment, was heard here yes- terday when Dr. Leonardus Trip, President of the Bank of International Settlements, read the An- nual Report.

THE QUOTA SYSTEM AND BANS ON IMPORTS WERE DE- NOUNCED IN THE REPORT AS FACTORS TYING UP WORLD TRADE.

THESE, TOGETHER WITH THE LACK OF ANY DEFINITE ARRANGEMENT WITH REGARD TO CURRENCIES, WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PRESENT STATE OF THE INTER- NATIONAL CREDIT MARKET.

“WORLD OPINION," DECLARED DR. TRIP, “IS BEGIN- NING TO DEMAND THAT A SERIOUS EFFORT BE MADE TO SOLVE THESE BIG OUTSTANDING PROBLEMS.

"It is a task which should be taken in hand with understand- ing, courage and goodwill.

Only in this way will it be pos- sible to achieve satisfactory re- sults."

After reading the Report, Dr. Trip resigned his post as President of the Bank,

Dr. Hjalmar Schacht (Germany) expressed appreciation of Dr. Trip's services as President, after which Dr. Beyen was elected new Pre- sident.

ATLANTIC AIR RIVALRY

Giant 'Planes Designed

The prospect of competing Trans- atlantic air services is disclosed by an announcement that the Glenn Martin Company of Baltimore has designed a huge air liner for flights between the United States and Europe.

A company is being organised to operate machines of this type.

According to the plan submitted to the Department of Commerce, the machines will be considerably larger than the flying boats which Imperial Airways and Pan-American •

Air- tays are at present

developing. They will be capable of carrying -40 passengers and two tons of cargo for 5,000 miles without refuelling.

The average speed of the Martin 'planes will be 175 m.p.h. They should make the Eastward crossing, in less than 19 hours, and the West- ward crossing în 21 hours.
