Raising of Plover Cove Dams, Uprating and Extension of Sha Tin Treatment Works and Pumping Station and Tai Po Tau Pumping Station

10.86. Construction began on raising the dams and spillway of the Plover Cove reservoir to increase the storage capacity from 37,378 to 51,778 million gallons.

10.87. At Sha Tin, the first stage extension, which increases the capacity of the existing rapid gravity filters from 80 to 95 million gallons per day was completed and associated pumps installed. The provision of control, instrumentation and electrical plant, and the manufacture of the polyelectrolyte and carbon dosing plant were well advanced. A contract was let for the supply of anthracite material to replace part of the sand filter media to increase further the filtration capacity to 130 million gallons per day. Construction work commenced on the main civil engineering works for the new extension to add 65 million gallons per day to the treatment works capacity. The manufacture of the filter and settlement tanks plant proceeded, and tenders were invited for the supply and erection of associated pumps. Negotiations for the chemical plant control were near completion.

10.88. At Tai Po Tau additional pumps were installed at the pumping station to increase the capacity to 120 million gallons per day, and the contract for the additional intake and aqueduct work, associated with the increase to 160 million gallons per day pumping capacity, was substantially completed. Contracts for the supply of valves and intake screening plant were awarded, and contract documents for the pumps required were prepared.

High Island Water Scheme

10.89. Site investigations for the dams and tunnels were nearing completion, and a contract was awarded for the large scale trials required to establish the method of construction and to obtain design data for the dams. Construction of access roads to the Eastern Tunnels and main dam and the construction of senior staff quarters were well advanced. Contract documents for the Western and Eastern tunnels were finalized.

North West Water Scheme

10.90. A report on the revised proposals for this scheme was received from the Consultants, and subsequently considered in the Water Resources Development Committee.
