LAYING in almost a quagmire, the Army overwhelmed the Civilians in the Final of the Lai Wah Cup football competition yesterday on fall of rain throughout the match failing to dampen the ardour of the players. The Army were full value for their win and must be congratulated on a bril- liant display, and the honours of the game go to Stevens, Campbell and above

THE CIVILIANS WERE FORCED TO MAKE SEVERAL CHANGES AND DUE TO THE FACT THAT RODGER WAS UNABLE TO PLAY, BELTRAO WAS PLACED IN - GOAL WHERE HE GAVE A PLUCKY DISPLAY. OTHER CHANGES IN THE TEAM MATERIALLY WEAKENED THE DEFENCE AND THE INCLUSION OF BOWEN AND REMEDIOS, THE -FORMER SHANGHAI INTERPORT CAPTAIN, DID NOT HELP MATTERS. HE CAN STILL MOVE QUICKLY DESPITE HIS BULK, AND HIS HEADWORK WAS INVALUABLE IN VIEW OF THE DEADLY CENTRES BY IRWIN AND FERGUSON.
The entire Civilian half-back line was miserable. Remedios, on the right flank, was much too slow and only saw three of his passes reach their objective, while Bliss, at centre-half, was Costa, pitiful and never tackled; consequently he was easily passed on the slippery surface. forced up to left-half by the inclusion of Bowen, was lost and although he reached some of the Army halves' high passes with his head, his own passes were never accurate.
Bowen, who partnered Strange at left-back, was a com- plete failure. He seemed content to bang the ball anywhere and never gave Beltrao the confidence a goal- keeper expects from his full-back. His clearances lacked sting and in- variably fell into the hands of one of the opposing half-backs.
