GENERAL

10.01. The Waterworks Office is responsible for all aspects of water supply and distribution carried out by Government. The work is divided among five divisions and three units, each with specific responsibilities as shown on the operation and organization chart. Consulting engineers are appointed to carry out planning, feasibility studies, and construction of new works which are beyond the capacity of the office or which require specialist knowledge. A list of projects undertaken by Consulting Engineers is given at Appendix BB. New works and a large proportion of the maintenance work are carried out by contract, but the operation of supply, the distribution of water, and maintenance of meters and machinery are done by Waterworks staff.

10.02. Despite the low rainfall in the last six months of the year, a continuous 24-hour supply was generally maintained throughout the year, except to those areas in the New Territories supplied from minor intakes.

10.03. Major works in progress during the year included increasing the capacities of Sha Tin treatment works and Tai Po Tau pumping station, the raising of the Plover Cove dams, and the construction of access roads for the High Island Water Scheme. Details of these works are given in paras. 10.46 and paras. 10.93 to 10.96.
