9.79. 98 traffic counts and 10 minor traffic studies were carried out in conjunction with traffic management schemes and planning of new road layouts on the Island. Some 90 traffic counts of the same nature were conducted in Kowloon and the New Territories.

9.80. 'Clearway' proposals were planned for Harcourt Road and the completed section of Waterfront Road on the Island.

9.81. The first section of 'Clearway' came into operation along Shanghai Street between Mong Kok Road and Public Square Street in Kowloon. This is the first 'Clearway' to be introduced into the Colony and improvements in the flow of traffic on Shanghai Street have been noted during peak hours.

Planning and Design

9.82. The examination of Town Planning Layouts prepared by the Planning Branch of Crown Land & Survey Office continued throughout the year. Recommendations and comments covering traffic engineering aspects of these layouts were made in each case.

9.83. On Hong Kong Island, 18 major traffic engineering designs were completed including proposals for Stubbs Road/Tai Hang Road/Wongneichong Gap Road grade separated intersection; Elevated Road along King's Road from Tsing Fung Street to Healthy Street; Garden Road/Queensway grade separated intersection; Elevated Road from Pokfulam Road to Connaught Road West; primary route along Aldrich Bay and Shaukiwan Road/Chai Wan Road grade separated intersection. In addition, numerous street widening, intersection design and minor planning schemes were prepared.

9.84. On the Mainland, a large number of designs involving major road improvement schemes were also completed. The more important of these were the Cornwall Street/Waterloo Road/Junction Road grade separated intersection, Jordan Road Interchange and Ferry Concourse, Elevated Road from Cheung Sha Wan Road to Boundary Street and the proposed layout of grade separated intersections at Tai Ho Road/Texaco Road Junction. Other schemes, namely Tai Po Road/Lung Cheung Road Grade Separated Intersection and the proposed primary route linking Ching Cheung Road with Kwai Chung Road were handed over to the Consultants for completion of the detailed design.
