Pedestrian Facilities

9.70. 'Pedestrian Problem Spots' were reviewed and a report was submitted to the Transport Advisory Committee. The review took into consideration some 89 locations in the Colony. In the review, 16 footbridges, 3 pedestrian subways, 10 pedestrian signal crossings and 11 crossings were proposed. In assessing the priorities for improvement given in the review, accident figures and counts of pedestrian and vehicular traffic were taken into account.

9.71. A pedestrian footbridge at Castle Peak Road near Tai Wo Hau Resettlement Estate in the New Territories was completed.

9.72. The design of 3 footbridges on the Island, 7 in Kowloon and 4 in the New Territories was being carried out.

9.73. Other facilities provided for pedestrians included the establishment of uncontrolled pedestrian crossings, 24 on the Island, 40 in Kowloon and 3 in the New Territories.

9.74. Modification to existing traffic signal settings to facilitate pedestrian movement at intersections was also carried out at frequent intervals.

9.75. In conjunction with major road projects, 6 pedestrian footbridges were completed on Waterfront Road on the Island.

9.76. Work on the extension of the Star Ferry subway across Edinburgh Place on the Island commenced and construction was nearing completion for three subways at the Kowloon City Roundabout in Kowloon.

9.77. In conjunction with the development of a site on the Central Reclamation, the Hong Kong Land Investment and Agency Co. Ltd. submitted proposals to Government to construct at their own cost a system of footbridges and elevated walkways in the Central District. These provide grade separation for pedestrians crossing Des Voeux Road Central, Chater Road, Connaught Road Central and Ice House Street and connect the various office buildings under the Company's ownership.

9.78. Chater Road at Statue Square on Hong Kong Island was closed to vehicular traffic during the Christmas holidays to serve as a pedestrian precinct. As this proved to be popular, it was decided that the closure would become a regular feature on all weekends and public holidays.
