Street Lighting
9.61. A total of 294 new street lamps was installed on the Island, 663 in Kowloon and 355 in the New Territories.
9.62. Annual expenditure on street lighting increased by 20% from $1,524,000 to $1,832,000 on Hong Kong Island.
9.63. For the Mainland, expenditure on street lighting increased by 30% to $4,506,000.00; $3,519,000.00 for Kowloon and $987,000.00 for the New Territories.
Public Transport
9.64. The planning, design and improvement of bus stops, bays, termini, shelters and other facilities continued throughout the year either independently or as part of road improvement work.
9.65. The Central Bus Terminus at Jubilee Street was being enlarged in conjunction with the current contract for the widening of Connaught Road Central. The planning of 2 new bus termini on the Island was also completed.
9.66. Investigations for improvement of bus routes in the southern districts of the Island and at the Mid-Levels were carried out. As a result, double decker buses were introduced to serve these areas after the completion of minor road improvements.
9.67. The construction of two large ferry concourses at Kwun Tong and Tai Kok Tsui was started. These concourses will accommodate all existing modes of public and private transportation, including termini for public light buses. Covered pedestrian ways will be provided.
9.68. Since the introduction of public light buses in 1969, active and careful consideration has been given to their operation. On some critical sections of the road network, certain restrictions of their operation had to be introduced to avoid unacceptable congestion.
9.69. The layout of a public light bus terminus at Ferry Street near Jordan Road Ferry Pier in Kowloon was finalized. This terminus has been designed to accommodate approximately 40 public light buses in four separate ranks to cater for different routes.
