9.53. On the Island, the designs for a further 5 signal intersections were completed and the installation of 3 sets of traffic light signals was in hand.

9.54. On the Mainland, a total of 13 additional sets of traffic light signals were installed. The total number of sets now in operation on the Mainland is 131.

9.55. The design of a further 14 installations on the Mainland was completed during the year.

9.56. Vehicle-actuated signals using inductive loop detectors were installed at several locations. The operation of this new type of detector has proved to be satisfactory.

9.57. 'Wig-wag' signals have been installed at fire-stations and railway level crossings replacing the existing two-aspect warning signals.

9.58. The phasing and timing of many existing signal installations were reviewed, adjustments being made where improvement was feasible.

9.59. The computer continued to play an important role in improving traffic signal installations and thereby helping to make maximum use of the existing urban road network. The TRANSYT system developed by the Road Research Laboratory was used as the basis of a comprehensive traffic study for the purpose of improving traffic flow on the Nathan Road Linked System. The first of the new timing plans was tested and up to 10% reduction in vehicle delay is expected. The programme for the improvement of timings at isolated intersections was run on the Government computer and initial results were very promising. A linked signal optimization programme was obtained from the Greater London Council and it is planned to make use of this to update all co-ordinated systems including that controlling the Central District road network.

9.60. Investigations proceeded into area traffic control with the aim of determining the feasibility of controlling the seventy or so traffic signals in the West Kowloon area by computer. As a part of these investigations a modification study was carried out by the manufacturers of the existing signal equipment. An engineer was sent to Europe to take part in the study and for technical discussions with traffic control experts. The investigation study report was substantially completed.
