registered rose by 18,038 representing a rate of increase of 13.8%. This is higher than last year's figure of 11.5%. Parallel with increasing road congestion in the urban areas, the shortage of parking spaces has also become more acute.

9.40. The graph on page 125 illustrates the growth in population, road mileage, injury accidents and vehicle registration in the past decade. Generally, the trend follows those of preceding years.

9.41. Two Traffic Engineering Divisions are now fully established. These are the Traffic Engineering (H.K.) Division and the Traffic Engineering (Mainland) Division each headed by a Chief Engineer. The responsibilities of the two divisions are divided on a territorial basis.

Traffic Aids

9.42. Routine installation of all types of traffic aid devices continued throughout the year in conjunction with highway improvements or as separate schemes.

9.43. A sign shop was established in the Stanley Prison for the manufacture of reflectorized traffic signs. Two new contracts for the supply of 'Stove Enamel' traffic signs and traffic signs supports were entered into with local manufacturers, each covering a twelve month period.

9.44. To provide guidance to motorists, 15 directional signs were installed at the newly completed sections of Cotton Tree Drive and the Waterfront Road, which are two of the major traffic routes on the Island. In addition, 10 new directional signs were installed and 6 existing ones were replaced by new designs in connection with the opening of the Argyle Street/Prince Edward Road flyover and at the junction of Clear Water Bay Road and Lung Cheung Road. Work continued on the detailed design of gantry signs, both internally and externally illuminated. This type of direction sign was adopted and will be installed in many of the more complicated interchanges in the Colony.

9.45. 74 illuminated traffic aids on the Island were installed whilst 98 were removed. 157 illuminated traffic aids were installed and 69 removed in Kowloon. In the New Territories, these figures were 12 and 5 respectively.
