Kennedy Road, Wongneichong Gap Road, Mt. Parker Road and Plunkett's Road. Major improvement works also commenced at the junction of Pokfulam Road/Bonham Road/Hill Road.
Roadworks in Kowloon
9.28. Work on the $40 million flyover complex at the Kowloon City Roundabout and the Prince Edward Road/Choi Hung Road Roundabout continued to progress well, with two of the five planned flyovers for the scheme already opened to traffic and the foundation works to the remaining structures substantially completed. The good progress has been maintained despite difficulties being encountered from congested utility services within the site and the continued heavy traffic flow around the area. One major contract, the Lai Chi Kok Interchange, was completed during the year and helped smooth out the traffic flow towards Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung.
Cross-Harbour Tunnel and Associated Road Connection Works
9.29. The $270 million contract for construction of the Cross-Harbour Tunnel, in which Government has an interest, continued to progress well. Fabrication of tunnel units proceeded and by the end of March 1971 six units had been launched and four of these placed in position on the sea-bed. In total there will be fifteen units and steel fabrication had started on the eleventh of these. At the same time the construction of the north approach ramp to the tunnel was well advanced and work had begun on the south approach ramp.
9.30. Good progress was made on most aspects of the road connections to the Cross-Harbour Tunnel. The works comprise a system of grade-separated interchanges to connect the tunnel to existing road networks on both sides of the Harbour.
Roadworks in the New Territories
9.31. Work continued throughout the year on the access road up Beacon Hill as part of the project for installing a new approach surveillance radar on the hill top, and the Army continued with their formation works on Stage III of the Luk Keng-Tai Mei Tuk Road.
