How to Wash an
EIDERDOWN
If you are grand enough to have an eiderdown covered in real silk, you must never wash it. Send it to the cleaners instead. But if you have an eiderdown covered with any other material, it can (and should) be washed like this.
1. Bring it out into the open air on a fine breezy day. There must be no prospect of rain.
2. Hang it over a line and beat it well.
3. Next prepare a bathful of luke- warm soapy lather made of a good soap powder or from-soap flakes. Place the eiderdown in this and squeeze it thoroughly and quickly. Be sure you wash every part of it, working methodically from, say, left to right.
4. Rinse it in a tepid bath of vinegar and water. (Half a cup- ful of vinegar to each gallon of water.) This should fix and brigh- ten the colours as well as rinsing of the first lather.
5. Then rinse it twice more in vinegar and water of the same tem perature, and after the third rinse put the eiderdown through the wrin ger. The latter should be set loose- ly so that the eiderdown will go through quickly.
6. Place it over two lines in 2 shady place to dry. Change the position this is important from
time to time, shaking it as you move it to fuff up the feathers, Peg it out lengthways and not too tightly. 7. When it is nearly dry, lay it fat on a table and beat it gently with a cane." ~
It may take as much as two days for your eiderdown to get thorough- ly dry
