and one started. In the 1,500°F zone the ducts between Nos. 1 and 2 and between Nos. 3 and 4 incinerators were modified to facilitate the fitting of additional dampers. This, it is hoped, will allow greater sub-division of the duct and so give a higher degree of plant availability. The main by-pass damper has been modified with a view to achieving better mixing and hence even duct temperatures at and beyond this point. To achieve this the two top damper blades on either side of the central wall, were removed and replaced by a blanked arch. A reversing fulcrum was fitted to the damper mechanism to enable the top two blades to move in an opposite direction to the lower two blades, giving better mixing in respect of the gases at different levels in the duct. In the 850°F zone the division plate which divides the flow of gases to each pair of I.D. fans was cut back some 4 feet to spread more load to the inner fans which draw from beneath the plate. The turbo-alternator steam end was opened up and the rotor removed for the first time since commencing operations. Both the rotor and the stator were found to be in a very good condition. During the period under review, 2,603 mechanical and 724 electrical repairs were carried out.

8.31. At the Kennedy Town Abattoir 1,628 mechanical and 1,288 electrical repairs were carried out by the Incinerator Plant Staff. Certain modifications were made at the request of the Urban Services Department. The major overhaul of all refrigeration and abattoir machinery was carried out and one boiler cleaned internally and externally and surveyed.

Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Plants

8.32. These Sections maintain all air-conditioning plants including associated water pumps with chlorination equipment and refrigeration plants. At the end of the year, 40 major air-conditioning plants totalling 7,600 tons of refrigeration were in operation. The biggest plant in Hong Kong, installed in Murray Building, was accepted for maintenance during the year. This is the first large Government Building in which the ventilated ceiling system for air distribution was introduced; the results are so far satisfactory. In addition to plant operation 3,383 maintenance visits were paid to non-attended plant and 243 fault calls were attended.
