The Paint Shop in the Caroline Hill Workshop not only deals with the painting of electrical appliances and other miscellaneous items but also complete vehicle re-spraying, although it has been necessary, on occasion, to have some of this latter work carried out under contract. In Kowloon the lack of workshop space necessitates not only all vehicle re-spraying but also all vehicle body repairs being carried out under contract. The cost of such work by contract continues to rise but in the circumstances of current Workshops congestion this additional cost has to be accepted. In Kowloon room is available for only domestic equipment to be painted and small re-touching jobs carried out on vehicles. However, the work load in the Paint Shops is expected to be eased in the near future when the re-painting of some electrical appliances which has been found to be uneconomical will cease. During the year the Vehicle Sections completed 81,702 Works Orders, an increase of almost 71% on the previous year's figure. These Works Orders included the major overhaul of 673 vehicles and the complete re-building of 212 vehicle bodies. 20,141 vehicles were serviced, a decrease of 10% on the previous year's figure. This is accounted for by the fact that during the period under review the periods between servicing were increased. 1,534 accident repairs and 9,915 breakdown repairs were carried out, 281 vehicles were re-painted in the Workshop and 4,514 had paintwork touched-up, 2,873 electrical appliances and, with the assistance of the Parking Meter Section, 5,229 parking meter casings, indicators, mounting brackets and post number plates were also painted. Minor items included repairs to 545 refuse handcarts and litter bins, 170 bicycles, 2,390 upholstery repairs, 1,994 carpentry tasks and 11,318 jobs in the Welding, blacksmiths and tinsmiths shops. Under contract 273 vehicles were repainted and 167 vehicle bodies built.

Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Sections

8.21. These Sections test and examine new refrigerators, room coolers, ventilation equipment, deep freezers, water coolers and other specialist equipment and maintain and overhaul these items. A large number of room coolers are maintained under contract and to ensure contractors' compliance with the terms of their contracts an inspection service of these room coolers was brought into being during the year, 3,347 such inspections being made. The advantages of such a service are apparent in the improved maintenance of the units on the part of the contractors. In Kowloon, the painting of refrigerators and air-
