and procedures and the preparation of man-power estimates necessary to produce a viable Section. Work was commenced on a standard system of Works Orders, the introduction of Master Work Registers and the redesign of Vehicle History Cards with a view to ultimate centralization of records, the separation of vehicle minor repair function from major repair function, the revision of the existing system of allocating Job Numbers and the introduction of new vehicle servicing records for use in existing service stations and the proposed new servicing stations at Kennedy Town, Lai Chi Kok and with the Police Force.

8.12. Throughout the year the work of the Section progressed steadily and trials with the new procedures were carried out in the Vehicle Workshop at Caroline Hill. The frequency of scheduled inspection servicing of vehicles was extended from once every 6 weeks to once every 8 weeks and optimum mileages for assembly oil changes increased. This will improve overall availability of Government vehicles and achieve considerable savings on costs of oil.

8.13. Trials were extended to the Air-Conditioners and Refrigeration Workshops and efforts were made to achieve a substantial increase in the production of overhauled refrigerators by eradicating the bottleneck existing in the preparation of cabinets for respraying.

8.14. The preparation of Stock Lists of standard spare parts for vehicles was put in hand.

8.15. The introduction of new procedures into the Hong Kong and Kowloon Workshops is now imminent. Initial investigations into the economical aspects of certain repair work have resulted in such work being stopped which will, in due course, result in savings and reduce the load in the Workshops.

Plant Sections

8.16. The Diesel Plant Shops maintain and repair Government mobile plant, diesel engines, agricultural equipment, emergency generators, and water pumps not connected with water supply. During the year, a total of 16,708 Works Orders were completed, an increase of nearly 6% on the figure for the previous year. These Works Orders included the initial testing and commissioning of 701 items of new plant and equipment and the installation of 21 water pumps and emergency generators.
