Lifts and Escalators
8.07. There are now 6,997 lifts and 117 escalators in use in Colony. 7,793 certificates in respect of examinations and tests of safety equipment were issued and 26 investigations were made into lift accidents, unregistered lifts and complaints by the public.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE DIVISION

8.08. The Operation and Maintenance Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of major plants such as municipal incinerators and specialist electrical and mechanical services at hospitals and Kai Tak International Airport. The division also includes a central workshop organization which has a general maintenance responsibility and a specialist responsibility for Government's fleet of 3,128 vehicles which is amongst the largest in the Far East. The Division was formed in 1969 following the amalgamation of the previously separate Electrical and Mechanical Divisions. The amalgamation is proving successful and already economies in labour, overtime working and common services are being effected.
8.09. The nucleus of the Progress and Planning Section was formed early in the year to assess the structure of the organization required to introduce a production control system in the Workshops. The section is now developing to introduce a centralized records system, job control system, and spare parts control. A check on the economic viability of work carried out is to be introduced together with a limited Work Study capability.
8.10. The Workshops Section has two main Workshops located at Caroline Hill, Hong Kong and Sung Wong Toi Road, Kowloon, and the Sub-Workshops at Fan Gardens in the New Territories. The main Workshops are further sub-divided into Mechanical, Electrical and Air-Conditioning Sub-Sections. Both main Workshops continue to be extremely short of working space as commitments continue to grow at about 8% per annum compounded. Two Maintenance and Repair
