Officers recruited in this grade although not pupils are, subject to holding the necessary academic qualifications, able to take professional examinations. In the 1970 Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors examinations (Land Surveying Section) 2 Surveying Assistants (one Land and one Engineering) passed the first examination; 2 Surveying Assistants (Land) passed the intermediate and 2 (one Land and one Engineering) passed the final examination; in the General Section one Surveying Assistant (Estate) Class II passed the intermediate examination and 4 Surveying Assistants (Estate) Class II the first examination.

7.55. During the year one Survey Training Class comprising 4 Surveying Assistants (Land) Class III and 5 Surveying Assistants (Engineering) Class III completed a 7 months full-time course and one Cartographic Training Class of 15 Cartographic Assistants Class III, 7 from this office, 6 from New Territories Administration, 1 from Agriculture and Fisheries Department and 1 from Fire Services Department completed a six months full-time course.

7.56. The courses were conducted in accommodation provided at the Technical College but all courses were organized and instructors provided by the Survey Branch.

7.57. All Surveying and Cartographic Assistants Class III are required to pass a departmental promotion examination before gaining promotion to Class II. During the year results were as follows:

7.58. A limited number of Surveying Assistants (Estate) who have the necessary academic qualifications to become Student Members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors are recruited at Class II level and encouraged to take a correspondence course and to attend evening classes at the Hong Kong Technical College. Surveying Assistants (Estate) who were preparing for the final examination were permitted to attend a day-release course at the Hong Kong Technical College on one day each week. There were six officers undergoing this form of training during the year, and one student passed the final examination and five the intermediate examination (General Section) of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
