Cartography
7.33. The accelerated revision programme for basic mapping and the new specification of 1/1,200 scale plans have created problems from the cartographic point of view. The new specification, while undoubtedly simplifying and speeding up field work, slows down the drawing side by requiring a considerable amount of deletion of old detail no longer required. This, together with the pressure of increased production from the survey sections, is creating something of a bottle-neck. However, by full utilization of photo-drawing techniques, any delays are minimized and in due course revision in the drawing office should be easier and quicker.
7.34. Production of the new edition 1/2,400 plans continued to schedule, most developed areas now being completed. The first 1/4,800 photo-compilations from these plans have also been prepared. These form useful and accurate plans covering large areas of the highly developed districts.
7.35. The new dual-language 1/50,000 maps are almost ready for printing. Judging from the interest shown by the public at the recent map exhibition, this two-sheet series should prove a best-seller.
7.36. Revision of the 1/10,000 series, including conversion to dual-language form, is now accelerating. Two more sheets are virtually ready for printing and work has started on four others. Copies of all revised sheets will be forwarded to the Directorate of Military Surveys in United Kingdom for the production of revised 1/25,000 series.
7.37. The so-called 'Foot-path and Amenities' series was renamed the 'Countryside' series and sheet 1 (Hong Kong Island) was published in February. 4,000 copies were printed, of which only a few remain, and a revised second impression will shortly be made. Sheet 2 (Hong Kong Mainland-East) is under planning at present and production will commence shortly.
7.38. The folded map (Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories)—commonly known as the 'Tourist Map' is being completely redesigned and compiled and will be printed in bilingual form.
7.39. The 8 inch to 1 mile series of the urban areas is also under consideration for recompiling and production will commence next year.
