6.26. Good progress was maintained throughout the year on most major projects. The main work of this Division consisted of the construction of seawalls, breakwaters, piers, incinerators and reclamations. General maintenance work was carried out on existing seawalls and piers and construction of a number of minor projects including navigational aids at various points throughout the Colony was completed. Other activities included site investigations, hydrographic surveys, under-water inspections of piers, watermains and submarine sewage outfalls and the investigation into the problems of refuse disposal by controlled tipping.

Hong Kong

6.27. Except for two gaps left in the seawall for drainage purposes, the construction of the main seawall retaining Wan Chai Reclamation was completed and 7.5 acres of land were reclaimed.

6.28. The Causeway Bay Reclamation and seawall were completed, with the exception of the western end, which is included in the Cross-Harbour Tunnel project.

6.29. The pier for the Fire Services Department sited at their North Point Headquarters was completed. Work on another pier for the Fisheries Office and Marine Licensing Station in Aberdeen proceeded satisfactorily and the piling for this was also completed.

6.30. To cope with the increased usage of the Poultry Pier at Kennedy Town by large cargo vessels, a spring fender system was installed in the pier to replace the existing fixed one.

6.31. The Kennedy Town Refuse Incinerator consisting of four incinerator units was accepted by Government. The plant and equipment for a fifth incinerator unit has been ordered and Consultants are being appointed to carry out the design and to supervise the construction of the Civil Engineering and Building Works.
