BRITISH SHIPPING
SHORTAGE
Grave Concern Shown By Chamber
London, To-day.
Grave concern is expressed in the annual report of the Shipping Chamber of Great Britain that to- day Britain owns only approxim ately 2,000 freight and passenger ships.
This is less than the number of ships flying the British flag at the outbreak of the Great War.
In the event of war, Britain would have at her disposal only 14,000,000 tons, as against 17,500,- 000 in 1914.
The report then announces that the Chamber will present a resolu- ition to the Empire Conference,
meeting in London in May.
The
will resolution
advocate safeguarding measures for British shipping in the face of foreign competition.-Trans-Ocean.

The prospects of the tightening of money rates, together with the recent clamour against the present high rates- charged by the CMO, seem to indi- cate a narrowing margin of profit. We doubt if there will be any forced Gov- ernment armament buying programme, but we believe that statistics and acce- lerated business warrant. higher prices.. We look for an upward trend in the volume of railroad freight, hence we would purchase selective rails at around these levels. We would continue: to- limit purchases of utilities to reces-- sions. Fears that the labour troubles · will spread into the electrical-equip- - ments industry are the main cause of in industrials,- the present weakness but we would purchase on any further declines.
