AMERICA'S TENNIS

PROBLEM

SECOND SINGLES PLAYER!

GT. BRITAIN IN SIMILAR FIX

(By The Twelfth Man")

London, January 28. Those people of little spirit who have already said good-bye to the Davis Cup on behalf of Britain sim- ply because Perry will not be at Wimbledon this year to help defend it need a little kick now and then.

MS

The fact that America, like our- selves, are anxiously looking round

for a second singles player to sup- port Donald Budge in their com- ing challenge for the Cup may sup- ply one of these timely kicks.

I can quite imagine the Ameri- cans studying their new ranking list to find a No.-2 player to Budge been just as closely as we have studying our list to find support for H. W. Austin.

NOT FORMIDABLE The American ranking list does not seem a very formidable one. Apart from Budge there is only one man in the first four who has pre- viously visited this country, and that is Bitsey Grant.

Sixto Escobar, above, retained his world bantamweight boxing championship on Sunday night when he outpointed Lou Sales, the former holder, in a 15 round bout at Porto Rico.

I believe I am right in saying that Rene Lacoste invented the grip and that "Perry was the Arst English player to use and succeed

with it.

OUR PAIRS

The usual plans for seasoned are being supplemented by the or- ganisation of a junior Davis Cup squad with a comprehensive pro- gramme. Whether this squad can I am glad to note, too, that Mr. suddenly develop adequate talent is a moot point, but it shows that the Americans have got a move on, which cannot be said in favour of the selectors.
