TANKS FOR

BRITISH CAVALRY

All the eight cavalry regiments of the British Army, which are to be mechanised under the scheme announced in December, 1935, are likely to be equipped with light tanks.

When the scheme was announced it was intended that some should be converted into mechanised cavalry that is, the personnel would be carried in light trucks. The latter decision may now be altered.

The truck had been successfully tested during the summer training of 1935 by a squadron of the 3rd Hussars. It carried eight men with their equipment and ammunition. and a light automatic. It had been: Ispecially designed to make rapid

exit easy.

The underlying idea was to pro- vide increased mobility and radius, of action for cavalry while retain-- ing their role as an arui of oppor-- tunity-for rapid occupation of tac- tical features some distance in ad- Sa. L

vance of the main army as well as C. for protective work. The French:

have the same idea of transporting their cavalry in motor vehicles."

Economy In Personnel

The conclusion to be drawn from the change of plans is presumably that, in taking stock of the require-- ments of the Army and in particu lar of the new mobile division which: is being created, it is found that more tanks are needed.

Their role is not dissimilar to that- of the new mobile division which is a greater economy in personnel and armoured protection is available, though there is rather less fire po-

wer.

The new move will increase the desire of the Tank Corps that these new units should be incorporated: with them. It is, however, a wise concession to sentiment, which is always a powerful factor is esprit Messrs. H. B. Joseph and Co.,de corps, to allow the cavalry to- received the following quotations retain their regimental traditions from Singapore in Straits Currency and identity intact.

Their role in battle is not essenti- ally changed. It is only a new me- thod evolved by modern science of carrying the men.

The mechanisation of the eight regiments of cavalry will affect about 2,500 men.
