URGENT S.O.S. MESSAGES
AN A.P.C. OIL-TANKER, THE ANGELINA, BOUND FROM FOOCHOW TO TAMSUI IN NORTH FORMOSA, IS RE- PORTED TO HAVE STRUCK A ROCK THIS MORNING AND TO BE SENDING OUT S.O.S. SIGNALS.
CARRYING A CREW OF ABOUT THIRTY,- OF WHICH EIGHT OR NINE ARE BRITISH, THE ANGELINA'S PLIGHT IS BELIEVED TO BE SERIOUS.
BRIEF REPORTS INDICATE THAT SHE STRUCK WHILST TRAVELLING AT FULL SPEED, WAS VERY BADLY HOLED, AND BEGAN TO SEND OUT URGENT CALLS FOR ASSIST-
ANCE IMMEDIATELY.
Derby Sweep Winner Rumours
Persistent rumours to the effect that Sir Victor Sassoon, whose horse, Happy Eve, won the Hong Kong Derby yesterday, had also won the big sweep of $66,000 odd, was denied on the course this morning, when Sir Victor informed the "China Mail" that he was very surprised as he had not bought a ticket in the Derby sweep.

First news reached the Colony from Manila, via Reuter's corres- pondent in San Francisco. His brief message stated:
"THE STEAMER ANGE- LINA OWNED BY THE AN- GLO-SAXON, PETROLEUM: COMPANY AND BELIEVED TO BE CARRYING PASSEN- GERS STRUCK A ROCK AT FULL SPEED AND IS CALL- ING FOR ASSISTANCE NEAR FORMOSA, ACCORDING TO S.O.S. SIGNALS. PICKED UP IN MANILA ”
Neither the local naval authori- ties nor the A. P. C. in. Hong Kong had received information of the wreck until this was supplied by the "China Mail," but it was stated by the A. P. C. that it was most unlikely that the Angelina was carrying passengers.
