4.85. One Architect was nominated to make official visits to a new prison in Auckland, New Zealand, in November 1970 to obtain details of its construction and equipment in connection with the Kowloon Reception Centre project.

4.86. Twenty-two officers of the Quantity Surveying Division and three local officers of the Maintenance Division were granted full pay study leave to enable them to prepare for the R.I.C.S. examinations.

4.87. Evening courses at the Hong Kong Technical College in subjects pertaining to architecture, building construction, structural engineering, quantity surveying and building services engineering were attended by 78 junior staff.

4.88. Thirty-one students of the Hong Kong Technical College (Department of Building, Surveying and Structural Engineering) and two students of the University of Hong Kong received summer vacation training in the office in the fields of building services, structural engineering and architectural work.

4.89. Two junior members of the Quantity Surveying Division attended a course at the Outward Bound School, Hong Kong, during the year.

4.90. All junior staff received training during the normal course of their employment and ten were promoted by examination boards during the year. In addition, as in the previous year, a training scheme for technical officers who are studying to become Building or Maintenance Surveyor is operated in conjunction with the Buildings Ordinance Office. The officers spend periods in both the Maintenance Division of the Architectural Office and in the Buildings Ordinance Office, to broaden their experience and assist them in their studies.

Welfare

4.91. The Architectural Office held its Christmas party, and as in previous years, it was very successful and well attended.
