Joe Louis, the sensational “Brown Bomber" seen above croaching above his sparring partner whom he has knocked out, is ranked second to Max Schmeling in the list of heavyweights, accord- ing to "The Ring."

London, January 28. Small Montana, of Manila, former firweight champion of the world, to-day signed a contract to fight Pat Palmer, of England, on March 4. It will be a 10 round bout. (On Monday, "Mon- tana was outpointed by Tiny Bostock, ex-choir boy, in a 10 Round bout in Manchester).

WORLD BOXERS ARE REVIEWED

BRITISH FLYWEIGHTS

TO THE FORE

HEAVYWEIGHT SURPRISE

(By HAROLD LEWIS)

London, Jan. 16.

RANKING the boxers, lawn tennis players and pastime in America. Several individuals and col- lective bodies in the United States have an annual ranking of boxers, and one of these, usually relia- ble as a guide to American opinion, has been pub- lished by "The Ring.".

Of the 57 boxers named in the different weights 29 are Ameri- can born, while the remaining 28 consist of nine from Great Bri- tain and Ireland, five from British Dominions, and the rest from other countries.

Coming from an American viewpoint, this proportion is more generous than usual towards the world outside the United States, even though some of the remaining 28 are boxers habitually fight- ing in that country. The proportion, possibly, is not very far wrong, though impossible to dispute either way.

The first surprise is that Max Schmeling is ranked No. 1 heavy-weight, with Joe Louis, the negro,

whom Schmeling knocked out, second, and the re- cognised world champion, Jim- my Braddock (an American) third. This is a frank view of the fact that Braddock has not fought during 1936, and, re- membering that Braddock is 31, that he was defeated by many moderate men before winning his title, and that he has been ill, there is sound reasoning here-

BAERLUND FOURTH

Max Baer, the former champion, is not in the list. But Gunnar Bäer- lund, the young Finnish heavy- eight, whom I mentioned recently

as a possible world title contender, is significantly ranked fourth. Walter Neusel is ninth, and, quite rightly, no British heavy-weight is mentioned

Jock McAvoy," above, of Great Britain, is ranked fourth by “The Ring" in the world light-heavy weight boxing division.

An Englishman, Jack McAvoy, and Pat Palmer (London) fourth the British middle-weight cham-and sixth respectively. pion, ranked fourth to John Henry Lewis in the light-heavy- ed

weight class, Len Harvey, who put up a good fight against Lewis, does not appear.

THE "RING'S" CLAIMS

British boxers are also mention-

feather-weights, with our champion, Johnny Mc- Gory, sixth, Dick Corbett ninth, and Nel Tarleton, the former. Bri- tish title-holder, tenth. Walsh, Mc-
