stars and appear any less attrac- tive.
Their charm is one of an in- dividual nature, however. It isn't the same type of beauty, any more than their personality could be compared to that of a beauty contest winner. Their make-up must be of the same distinctive
nature.
The hairdress will play a very important part in the intellec- tual woman's mastery of feminine allure. If her features are re- gular and not too prominent she may be able to wear a very plain hairdress such as Ann Harding has made famous.
is.
If, however, her forehead put of proportion and much too high, and the nose is too pro- minent, the coiffure should be sof tened with waves large, loose wares. It should be built out on the sides and rather high or fluffy at the top. A deep hairline will make the forehead appear less high, and by adding width at the sides, the length of the nose will be less noticeable. This should be done conservatively, however, to avoid losing altogether that in- tellectual look which is in itself an unusual distinction.
Gertrude Michael, Myrna Loy, Irene Dunne and Greta Garbo have almost typical intel
faces, although no person ever ex- actly fits our conception of a type.
These suggestions for hairdress changes apply, of course, to zay woman with features such as those mentioned. The housewife can have an intellectual face just as best easily as the author of a seller.
The thing that should please the ladies of the more serious na- ture, however, is the general trend back to naturalness, which is gain- ing momentum both in Hollywood and throughout the world
The eyebrows have undoubted- ly been shaped by nature to en- bance the face most becomingly. Soft, natural colours in rouge and lipstick will accent the natural. beauty which radiates from with- in this person as well as from the actual features and colouring of the face.
The real mission of make-up is to portray the personality and features of the person, not to conceal them. The most perfect face in the world, repeated & thousand times, would create no- the thing more than ennui in bosom of a gallant.
Be yourself, but be your Dest self! That's the best slogan I know for the woman with brains, or the woman with beauty, or both.
