The 1936 Derby was won by Sir Victor Sassoon's Honeymoon Eve, which was primarily due to magnificent riding on the part of Mr. V. V. Needa. It will be recalled that Mr. Harbrad's Royal Scot, the favourite, took the lead from the very commencement but fail- ed to maintain the pace and had to be content with being third. There was, however, a great struggle between Honeymoon Eye and King's Lead (Mr. F. Marshall), but due to a sudden swerve by the latter pony at a critical stage, Mr. Needa succeeded in securing the verdict by a short head. It was certainly a great race, and I feel sure that the racing public would like nothing better than to see a repetition of this epic finish.

Mr. Dunbar's Hopes
Since winning the Derby with Liberty Bay a few years ago, Mr L. Dunbar has not met with any success in this classic event. He will be represented by Thunder Bay and Commencement Bay this year, in addition to which Mrs. Dunbar has entered Red Feather.
I have no doubt that Mr. Dunbar will centre his hope on Commence- ment Bay, a grey pony with a long body, something similar to Bear Claw. At the present stage it is doubtful whether this pony will be in good enough condition by the time the Derby is run. Its move- ment at the moment is not too im- pressive, but another two weeks of hard training may make the neces- sary difference.
Mr. Dunbar has secured the services of Mr. Hearn, who wil probably ride second string to Mr. L. G. Frost. Mr. Hearn comes with a big reputation Shanghai, and his prowess on the local turf will be keenly ched.
