BOMBARDMENT OF MERIDA

Madrid, Yesterday,

It is calculated that 20,000 German soldiers have disembark- ed for Spain since the last meeting of the League of Nations on the 12th inst. According to a statement by General Miaja, Commander of the Defence Forces in Madrid, these have been distributed on all the fronts, particularly the Madrid front, where it is believed they are 6,000 strong. The General adds that the Germans were clearly present during the recent fighting in the Boadilla sector.

"So far we have not captured any Nazi prisoners," the General added. "The German infantry launch their attacks in masses, as in the Great War, but the Government forces had been prepared for this. There are still very many Italians with the insurgents," he stated-Reuter

Madrid: The lull on all the fronts is complete. A Govern- ment communique states that no operation has been reported on the different sectors- Both the Government and insurgent. planes made raids on the enemy lines but no serious damage was reported. An insurgent cruiser bombarded Gigon, a few shells falling in the centre of the town, causing slight casualīties. -Renter's Bulletin Service.

It is officially stated that Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek was re- leased unconditionally and that his first action was to order the cessa- tion of hostilities and the withdrawal of the Government troops from Shensi

Marshal Chang Hsueh-liang explains, that the revolt was due to a misunderstanding which has now been cleared up. He erroneously thought that the Generalissimo was going to dismiss him and disband his troops so he detained him for self-protection. Fürthermore, he be- lieved that Nanking had failed to pay his troops but it transpired that the money had been misappropriated by one of his own subordinates who has now been arrested:

It is noteworthy that Marshal Chang does not mention the political issues, which confirms the view that his manifesta in an official communique issued-His Holiness the Pope, in his worldwide broadcast message issued on the 12th inst. was a mere "window dressings Jast night. The communique deplored the "many great evils which have fallen like a scourge Nanking Shanghai and the other cities went wild with joy added that Merida is 25 miles on humanity, civil society and the Church" He added that to as the news of the Generalissimo's release was flashed through- from the front and is not a day, more than ever, he felt near and present to all the Catholic out the country.
