NTEP right up, you bridge and monopoly players Europe has found a game that is perhaps quite as intriguing as your present means of diversion.
It is called "Potentatoes," and it's the latest rage in the leading drawing rooms of Vienna and Budapest. One astonishing thing about it is its complete displacement of bridge and rummy as after-dinner entertainment.
It was a kids' game to begin with, until a society woman saw them playing it and de- cided to try it on her friends. It's all very simple. You take pqtatoes, plus a few tiny implements, such as matches, needles, thread and other small things found in all households. and make toy figures. which look like little people in the midst of some occupation or act.
it's really amazing what can be done with these simple materials. The humble potato, it develops, has very interesting curves and ellipses and parabolas and can be made to imitate a bewildering variety of objecta.
The pastime spread with unexcelled speed. Hostesses began inviting guests to "Potentató” parties. Instead of supplying cards as in the ́ past, they supplied potatoes, nicely washed and wiped dry, potato scoopers to make hands and feet, sharp knives and matches.
Each guests at these parties places a cer- tain amount of money into a "kitty" and the
designs who
the most interesting "Potentato" is acclaimed winner and gets a

príze.
There's no doubt that "Potentatoes” is great entertainment. It takes ingenuity, too. Would you think a mere potato could turn into a plump mother wheeling a baby carriage? Of that struggling young author at this writing desk? The kettle-drummer 'is fine bit of work, as is the water carrier and oar-plying Chinaman: Other ideas are endless.

MAKE-UP has always been a of controversy.
M subject
though, in our day the controversy seldom stirs much water. Youth has forced make-up on the older generation, together with smoking, and when the" new beach togs, the. "seanties," appeared Mrs. Grundy felt that there was something more "solid" to attack, something which had possibilities, and could bring new surprises every year. So now-a-days the respectability of make-up is seldom questioned. On the contrary, most; women feel that it is not a deceit,... as the Grundys like to put it, but that it is necessary to the well-groomed.
Of course, when speaking of make-up, one does not think of crudely applied rouge and lipstick Make-up long ago reached the point of sophistication, in fact be- came an art, if you like!—even a science. There are very few per-> fect faces and bodies (the art of make-up does not concern itself
