INSURGENTS CONTINUE INCESSANT BOMBARDMENT

SEVENTH MEETING

IN NANKING

BOTH PARTIES REMAIN OBDURATE

LITTLE PROGRESS REPORTED IN

THE NEGOTIATIONS

(From A Special Correspondent)

Canton, To-day.

After a long silence, the Japanese Ambassador to China, Mr. S. Kawagoe, went to call on Mr. Chang Chan, the Chinese Foreign Minister, for the seventh discussion of Sino-Japanese relations yesterday afternoon at 3 p.m., and left the Chinese Foreign Office at 5.20.

It is understood that Mr. Kawagoe insisted on autonomy in North China and the joint suppression of Communism, and that

at least an understanding on the principle of these demands must be arrived at. On the other hand, Mr. Chang Chun pressed for the cancellation of the Shanghai and Tangku Trace Agreements and the restationing of the Chinese troops in the non-military zones described in these two agreements; the abolition of the East-Hopei regime; the withdrawal of the extra Japanese troops in Shanghai, the Yangtze Valley, and North China as prescribed in the treaties; and an effective method of stopping the smuggling in North China.
