FAMOUS PERSONALITIES AT INAUGURAL LUNCHEON

London, October 1.

7ITH a message from the King as a send-off, the National Sporting Club started life anew yesterday at a gathering in London. The King's message read: "The King greatly ap- preciates the loyal assurances addressed to him by those present at to-day's luncheon to cele- brate the rebirth of the National Sporting Club. His Majesty sends his good wishes for the future success of the club in carrying out the old tradi- tions of British boxing."

Many attempts have been made during the past few years The old atmosphere to re-establish the club on modern lines.

of the little underground theatre in Covent Garden can never be recreated. But, to judge by those now concerned with its future, the "old traditions" will live more strongly than ever.

Representatives of many branches of sport were present at yesterday's luncheon under the chairmanship of Lord Decies- They included: Sir Malcolm Campbell. Sir Louis Greig. Lord Brecknock, Sir Noel Curtis-Bennett, the Hon. S. M. L. O'Keefe, Mr. Charles B. Cochran and Mr. Walter Hackett.

BLAMED FOR LACK

OF KEENNESS

GAME MORE POPULAR THAN EVER BEFORE VINDICATION OF 3-2-3 FORMATION

(By HOWARD MARSHALL)

London, October 1. THE Rugby season is blossoming early.

Re-

ports of grand football come to hand from.. every quarter, and some of the clubs seem to [have leapt into their best form right away. Rich- mond, Blackheath, the Harlequins, Coventry, Gloucester, the Wasps, Llanelly, Neath, Swan- sea, Cardiff, all of them have started the season bravely, and the standard of September football has been uncommonly high.

These are happy auguries, and I do not think we need wor- ry overmuch about the 'complaint that there is a lack of keen- ness among the younger players. It is a complaint I have heard more than once this year from responsible officials, and so ve- hemently have they expressed themselves that I find it a little disturbing. Players, they say, will not turn out for practice. One leading old boys' club last Saturday had to cancel a "B" team match because the unhappy secretary could not raise a site.

pleasant to think that the game was never so popular, and there Costa's Interport Claim is evidence to support such a contention. Far more serious, to my mind, is the problem of how to make the most of the en- thusiasm available.
