WHAT

tion do without the channel buoys those floating markers that keep ships off the shoals? In & very real sense, the advertise- ments in this paper are channel buoys, placed for your protection --for the safeguarding of the family expenditures.

These advertisements are the signed statements of reputable firms who seek your patronage on the single basis of giving value for every dollar spent. They are bonest statements, the only kind an advertiser can use and remain an advertiser.

People who get the most for their dollar in the market-places are those who keep an eye on the channel buoys. Day by day, they follow the advertisements to learn what and where to buy to the best advantage. Make this a habit. Study the advertisements, in the interest of shrewder buying.

The advertisers in this paper have charted the channels of bay- ing for you. Keep to the course.

PASSENGERS FIGHT TO REACH CONTROLS

Johannesburg.

A few seconds after taking off in his private aeroplane, with two passengers, Dr. Dalton, the 53- the Benoni year-old captain of Flying Club, had a heart seizure recently and died at the controls.

The machine immediately soared to 2,000ft out of control, while the passengers, Miss Nora Atwell, aged 18, and MS R Kruger, a mine. shift boss made frantic efforts to reach the con- trols. The plane circled and dived high in the air while they endeavoured to drag the doctor's body from the cockpit through a narrow space to the passengeri seats

When a crash appeared almost inevitable, Mr. Kruger, who has had zine hours” flying experience. was able to reach the control with! the tips of his fingers. The ma- chine dived down and missed col- liding with high tension electric: wires by inches.

It then made a "pancake" land- jing in the open veld.. smashing| under-carriage, but the two pas sengers were practically unhurt.
