MANUMISSION OF SLAVES
Important Agreement
Reached
BETWEEN UNITED KINGDOM
AND SAUDI ARABIA
be-
London, To-day. By an exchange of Notes tween the United Kingdom Gov- ernment and the Goverment of Saudi Arabia, the two countries have agreed not to exercise for seven years the right to terminate the Treaty of Zidda, 1927, and at the same time to à modification of cer- tain of the provisions of the Treaty and of the letters exchanged at the time. The most important of these modifications relates to the right which His Majesty's Government have hitherto exercised to manumit slaves taking refuge at the British Legation at Zedda. "
A recent decree of the Saudi Government on slavery contains regulations whereby the importa- tion of slaves from any "country, whether by land or sea. unless they were recognised as slaves in their country of origin, is forbid-1. den. The decree also provides for greatly increased facilities manumission in Saudi Arabia, and lays down provisions for the bet-! ter treatment of slaves
These regulations are considered
by His Majesty's Government to be of a sufficiently satisfactory ature to warrant the abandon- ment of the right of manumission.
